Arlington Coal & Lumber Co., based in Massachusetts, has announced that it has reached an agreement to purchase the assets and real estate of Friend Lumber Company.

Arlington Coal & Lumber Co., a fourth-generation lumber and building materials dealer owned by the McNamara family and operated by President Robert K. McNamara, was founded in 1923 and has five locations in Massachusetts.

Friend Lumber Company, founded in 1945, is a third-generation lumber and building materials dealer with locations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

“We are excited to play a significant role in honoring the Friend Lumber Company family’s more than 76-year history in the lumber industry by welcoming them into our organization.

We look forward to welcoming the dedicated Friend Lumber associates to our staff and developing high-quality service relationships with the professional contractors and builders that have been loyal customers of Friend Lumber for many years,” President Robert McNamara stated.

Mark Jaffe, the current owner and president of Friend Lumber Company, will retire after the sale, having worked for his family’s lumber business for over 47 years.

“After three generations of our family operating Friend Lumber Company, now is the perfect time to find a new steward to bring the company into the future.” Jaffe stated.

“We couldn’t be more pleased than to be purchased by Arlington Coal & Lumber Company. The McNamara family has an excellent business reputation and their values align with those of Friend Lumber. Our employees should experience a seamless transition and our customers will receive the same quality service they have known since our humble beginnings”.

Arlington Coal & Lumber Co. serves professional home builders, remodeling contractors, and retail customers throughout Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.

The sale is expected to close in late August or early September 2021.
