Builders FirstSource Has Purchased John’s Lumber

Builders FirstSource (BFS) acquired the assets of John’s Lumber, based in Michigan.

According to BFS, John’s Lumber operates two locations serving the greater Detroit metropolitan statistical area, the No. 41 ranked single-family market in the country and home to nearly half of Michigan’s annual starts.

John’s Lumber was founded in 1947 and has remained family-owned and operated throughout its history.

Builders, remodelers, and retail customers can rely on the company for lumber and sheet goods, windows, millwork, siding, decking, kitchen and bath, and installation services. The company reported annual revenue of approximately $49 million for the previous 12 months.

BFS President and CEO Dave Flitman in a statement, “I’m happy to welcome Bill Brys and all of his team members to Builders FirstSource. John’s Lumber is known locally for having great people focused on providing high quality products and services to their customers. They will fit in very well with the people-first culture of our company.”

According to Flitman, the John’s acquisition will provide scale to BFS’s 14 current locations across Michigan, as well as allow for the expansion of the company’s value-added product offerings. He stated that BFS will continue to seek “accretive tuck-in” acquisitions that add value to the company and its customers.

“My dad’s philosophy was simple – treat customers right, and they will return time after time. Having grown up in and around the business, it was a very difficult decision for my siblings and me to sell the company,” Mike Aggeler, a John’s Lumber family owner and board member added.

“Builders FirstSource understood the needs of our family and was very easy to work with throughout the process. We care deeply about our employees and community. I’m convinced Builders FirstSource is the right home for our people, providing them with access to the resources and growth opportunities that will ensure their continued success in supporting our customers.”

BFS, based in Dallas, operates in 40 states with approximately 550 locations and has a market presence in 47 of the top 50 and 86 of the top 100 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs).

Roof and floor trusses, wall panels, stairs, vinyl windows, custom millwork, and pre-hung doors are among the value-added products offered by the company.

BFS also sells dimensional lumber and lumber sheet goods, as well as millwork, windows, interior and exterior doors, and other building materials. In January, the company completed its merger with BMC.
