2024 New Single-Family Home Bathrooms

According to the US Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Construction, single-family homes built in 2024 typically featured two full bathrooms.

Homes with three full bathrooms continued to have the second highest number of starts, at roughly 23%. Meanwhile, residences with four full bathrooms or more and those with one bathroom or less accounted for less than 10 percent of all homes.

According to the Bureau, a full bathroom consists of a washbasin, a toilet, and either a bathtub or a shower, or a combination of both.

65.0% of new single-family homes built in 2024 had two full bathrooms, indicating the second consecutive year of rise.

For the third year in a row, the proportion of single-family homes with three full bathrooms declined to 23.3%, while the proportion with four or more bathrooms climbed to 7.2%. Start-ups with one full bathroom or fewer declined to 4.5%.

In the United States, the East South Central division had the largest share of new single-family homes with two full bathrooms, at 71.6%.

No other division accounted for more than 70%. The Middle Atlantic had the lowest rate, with 52.0% of new single-family homes reporting two full bathrooms.

Starts in the Middle Atlantic division were significantly more likely to have four full bathrooms or more (20.2%), more than doubling any other division in terms of percentage.

Half-Bathrooms

At 53.7%, the majority of new single-family homes built in 2024 did not include half-bathrooms. 44.9% of new single-family houses have one half-bathroom.

In 2024, new single-family homes with two or more half-bathrooms accounted for only 1.4% of the market.

A half bathroom has a toilet, bathtub, or shower, although not all facilities are categorized as complete bathrooms.
