The vast majority of single-family home builders do not yet use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their operations.
20% of builders use AI to develop advertising/marketing materials, while 11% use it to study markets/plan projects.
In the figure below, less than 5% of businesses presently use this product to assist with another ten business processes, ranging from project design to automated construction equipment operation.
These findings are based on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) survey conducted in July 2025 and reflect an early industry reading that is expected to change in the future years.
Builders who are not currently employing AI were asked about the chances of doing so within the next two years.

Not surprisingly, the two sectors most likely to see new builders embracing AI are the development of advertising/marketing materials (average grade 3.6) and market/project analysis (3.0), which are also the ones with the highest adoption rates.
Meanwhile, the chances of builders using AI in any of the other business operations is substantially lower, since all ten obtained average likelihood ratings of less than 3.0.
Builders are least likely to use AI in the next two years for the operation of automated construction equipment (average rating: 1.7) and interactions with the local building or planning authority (1.9).
