According to NAHB’s study of Census Bureau statistics for 2024, wood framing continues to dominate the US single-family home construction market.
In 2024, wood framing accounted for 94% of all built single-family homes, cementing its position as the most popular construction method.
Concrete-framed homes accounted for 5% of completions, while steel-framed homes remained relatively uncommon, accounting for less than half of the market.
Approximately 959,000 wood-framed dwellings were completed in 2024. This was a 3% increase over the 2023 total.
This growth also resulted in a comeback in market share, with wood-framed sales increasing from 93% in 2023 to 94% by 2024.
Steel-framed dwellings, while relatively uncommon, have undergone significant increase.
Approximately 4,000 steel-framed dwellings were completed in 2024, a 33% increase over the previous year.
Meanwhile, the number of concrete-framed homes declined. Their market share fell from 7% in 2023 to 5% by 2024.
On a count, 55,000 concrete-framed dwellings were finished in 2024, a 15% decline from the previous year.
Residential resiliency regulations have led to a concentration of non-wood framing systems in the South.
In 2024, concrete-framed dwellings accounted for 9% of all single-family housing completions in the South.
Furthermore, nearly 95% of all steel-framed homes finished in 2024 were built in the South, demonstrating the region’s different building trends.
